REFORMATION STANDARDS
The Reformation was a "back to the Bible" movement that recoverd core truths of God's Word that had been obscured through time and tradition. Following are some of the key doctrines clearly taught in the Bible that help us understand how to follow Christ.
Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)
The Bible is the only Word from God without error. We affirm that Scripture is both infallible and inerrant and is the sole source of written divine revelation. It alone has authority to bind the conscience. The Bible alone teaches all that is necessary for our salvation from sin and is the final authority by which Christian doctrine and behaviour must be measured. It is God's Word that defines and establishes the Church, rather than the church that defines God's Word (II Timothy 3:16).
Solus Christus (Christ Alone)
Christ is the only mediator between God and people. We affirm that our salvation is accomplished by the mediatorial work of the historical Christ alone. His sinless life and substitutionary atonement alone are sufficient for our justification and reconciliation to the Father (1 Timothy 2:5-6; Colossians 1:13-18).
Sola Gratia (Grace Alone)
Salvation is only by God’s grace and not a result of human works. We affirm that in salvation we are rescued from God's wrath by his grace alone. It is the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit that brings us to Christ by releasing us from our bondage to sin and raising us from spiritual death to spiritual life (Ephesians 2:1-10).
Sola Fide (Faith Alone)
Justification is only received by faith in Jesus Christ. We affirm that justification is by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone. In justification Christ's righteousness is imputed to us as the only possible satisfaction of God's perfect justice (Romans 3:21-26).
Soli Deo Gloria (God's Glory Alone)
Only God is worthy of our worship. We affirm that because salvation is of God and has been accomplished by God, it is for God's glory and that we must glorify him always. We must live our entire lives before the face of God, under the authority of God and for his glory alone (1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 Peter 4:11; Revelation 1:6; 2 Peter 3:1; Ephesians 3:21; Revelation 7:12; Romans 11:36).
